A South African study showed The Omicron variant of coronavirus may be less severe even for unvaccinated.
After comparing with 11 thousand six hundred patients of Covid 19 from the first three waves and five thousand one hundred omicron patients, the study showed that unvaccinated people infected with the Omicron variant may be less prone to severe illness.
They also require less hospital care or die than the cases with previous variants.
According to the study, a quarter of the reduced risk of severe disease with Omicron was mostly because of higher immunity rates from past infection or/and vaccination.
Reduced virulence has also reduced the twenty-five percent risk of severe hospitalization or death compared to the delta.
The study was done by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) in the Western Cape region, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.
